Insights from Research on Student-Centered Learning

Updated: Dec 19, 2023

The research into student-centered learning is shaping a clearer understanding of how to foster enduring educational commitment among students. As researchers delve into its components and effects, they’re refining strategies to promote it.

Understanding Student-Centered Learning Studies from the Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education explored California high schools and identified critical aspects of student-centered learning. These schools, mainly serving students of color, emphasized engaging educational experiences, personalization, meaningful connections, and inclusive decision-making. Notably, these schools surpassed peers in graduation rates, assessments, and college persistence.

Insights from New England High Schools Another study by the Nellie Mae Education Foundation (NME) and the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute examined student-centered learning in New England high schools. It emphasized personalized, competency-based, anytime-anywhere learning and student ownership. While successful in personalized learning, implementing flexible learning experiences was a challenge.

Attributes of Student-Centered Learning Education Evolving's report identified seven key features of student-centered learning: positive relationships, meeting foundational needs, cultivating authentic identities, honoring student agency, relevance to real-world experiences, competency-based progression, and flexible learning opportunities.

Expanding Evidence for Student-Centered Learning Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC) developed a toolkit for gathering evidence of student-centered learning beyond traditional assessments. It suggests using surveys, assessments incorporating student voices, listening to students, and involving them in decision-making.

Future Research and Benefits The Students at the Center Hub, now operated by KnowledgeWorks, continues research on student-centered learning. This includes supporting student ownership and investigating learning accessibility. The benefits of student-centered learning span enhanced engagement, better performance metrics, and a focus on lifelong learning and problem-solving skills.

Ongoing and future research will provide a comprehensive understanding of the benefits of student-centered learning, aiding educators in creating more effective learning environments.
